An Interview with Attention Deficit's Michael Manring and Alex Skolnick

There's no question of the appropriateness of the band's name. Attention Deficit's music is what you might expect from a bunch of guys who have forgotten to take their Ritalin. Not that I'm suggesting that Michael Manring (bass), Alex Skolnick (guitar), and Tim Alexander (drums) have ADD, but you gotta wonder. Often fusion-like in direction, but sometimes almost avant garde, AD's compositions are a complex collage of sounds that take you from spacey landscapes to power-driven jazz-fusion to pitch-black themes that would fit perfectly in an X- Files soundtrack. Having now released two albums -- the self-titled Attention Deficit and the newest The Idiot King -- these guys are developing a style that is as hard to label as it is to listen to alone with the lights off -- and I mean that in the best possible way. To dispel some of the mystery, Michael Manring and Alex Skolnick graciously agreed to answer a few questions for ProgressiveWorld.net's readers.

Clayton Walnum: Okay, let's take care of the most important question first, the one that all Attention Deficit fans want to know the answer to, and the one about which a lot of folks stay up at night worrying. What's with that goofy dog?

Alex Skolnick: The image of the silly dog was presented to us by Magna Carta, our label. We're not sure if he belongs to someone, or where they got the image. But somehow, he fits like a glove!
Michael Manring: He's the Idiot King! He's sort of our mascot and a good representative for attention deficiencies of all kinds, especially ours.
CW: Thinking of both the first and second album, I'd describe your sound as a cross between fusion and dark ambient. How would you describe your sound? What did you set out to do?
MM: I like the term "dark ambient," but we didn't think much about genres or labels when we recorded our records. We mostly just wanted to see what kind of sounds we could come up with by drawing on our collective experiences and preferences. I don't think we were consciously trying to come up with an unusual sound, but we all come from such different backgrounds that playing together gives us the opportunity to work in unusual ways. How about "Dark Ambient Fusion"?!
AS: I would describe it as instrumental improvisation that has elements of rock, jazz and avant-garde. I think we set out to bring forth all our individual qualities in a way that would compliment our unity as a trio. We weren't sure what the end result of this would be, so it has a very experimental element as well.
CW: How did the three of you come to decide to create Attention Deficit?
AS: We originally came together for Michael's release Thonk," although we didn't record together at the same time. A few years later, Magna Carta approached us about doing a trio album, somewhat along the lines of their other releases in which they put musicians together in various combinations that have never been recorded before, such as Bozzio, Levin, and Stevens.
MM: Magna Carta had asked Alex and me about the possibility of doing a record as part of the series of trio projects they've been releasing. I suggested that it would be fun to have Tim as the third member, and fortunately the folks at Magna Carta liked the idea, too!
CW: The second album seems to be more in the fusion direction than the first. Was that a deliberate choice?

MM: To some extent. We wanted the first record to be very jam oriented, very cut-up and disjointed with lots of attention deficiencies! Since we had taken that approach on the first one, we decided to be a little more organized for The Idiot King. Mostly we just wanted to have the opportunity to work in a slightly different way.
AS: We didn't set out to do a "fusion" album. However, there are elements of that which became apparent for a couple reasons. I think we all have an appreciation for some of the great jazz/rock groups of the 70's (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report etc..). Also, I recently got my music degree from the jazz program at New York's New School University, and I think these studies affected my contributions, both compositionally and improvisationally.

CW: Alex, a lot of fusion bands with guitarists -- take Scott Henderson's group Tribal Tech, for example -- spend a lot of time trying to blow their audience away with guitar pyrotechnics. You take a more restrained approach to your playing on the Attention Deficit albums. Your playing is wonderful -- no one questions that you've got the chops! -- but more subtle than one might expect. What are your goals as a guitarist in Attention Deficit?

AS: I really didn't want Attention Deficit to be just about my guitar solos. This project is about the three of us, not myself and a rhythm section backing me up. I'm much more interested in the compositions and communication between the musicians. Even when I release my own albums, this will be the case, although you'll probably hear more guitar solos. I should point out that I love Tribal Tech, and Scott's a real inspiration.
MM: One of the things that's fun about playing with Alex is that he enjoys exploring texture and vibe as much as soloing and blowing.
CW: Michael, I understand that you were a student of Jaco Pastorius. Pastorius's melodic style of bass playing pops up here and there on Attention Deficit albums. What was working with Pastorius like? How is his influence felt personally by you and the other band members?
MM: Jaco was a complicated guy, simultaneously admirable and pitiful. He had been my hero as a teenager, so I felt lucky to have the chance to study with him. It's a long story, but I found I got more personally than musically from spending time with him. He made a big contribution to music, and I feel that every bassist now has to come to terms with the depth with which he played the instrument. He came along at a time when the bass was just starting to define itself, and he helped establish the possibilities for the future. I hope that my playing will always show his influence, as well as the influence of all the other artists whose work has had a big effect on me. Alex and I have talked about Jaco's music a lot, but actually I don't know if Tim was ever particularly a fan or not.
CW: What other artists are you listening to these days?
AS: Lately, I've been listening to a lot of albums that combine world music with jazz improvisation. I opened for Strunz & Farah, the Spanish style guitarists and had forgotten how much I love them. Bassist Matt Garrison's new CD is amazing, with great guitarists that aren't widely known outside of New York, David Gilmore (not from Pink Floyd!) and Adam Rogers. I also really like African bassist Richard Bona's album, even though it's much mellower than his live shows.
MM: I listen to kind of a strange collection of folks: Morton Feldman, Egberto Gismonti, Gyogy Ligeti, Tarika Sammy, Srinivas, Clastrier/Riessler/Rizzo, Alban Berg, Bill Evans, Paolo Angeli, Little Feat, Mafua, Sly & the Family Stone, Harry Partch, Oregon, Charles Mingus, XTC, Ralph Towner & Gary Peacock, Patrick Brayer, Thinking Plague, Meshuggah, Bela Bartok, Elis Regina, Anton Webern, Morphine, L. Subramanium, Mozart, Nguyen Le, Adriana Calcanhotto, Shakti, Meat Beat Manifesto, Wayne Shorter, Squarepusher, Hermeto Pascoal.
CW: Alex, parts of the first album remind me very much of the sort of thing Hendrix was trying on Electric Ladyland's "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)." Really beautiful stuff (in a spacey way) and not as dark as most of the rest of the album, although the things do get more intense as they go on. Did Hendrix play a key role in your development as a guitarist? Who are your major influences? Whose playing blows you away today?
AS: Hendrix was and is a major influence on me. It's funny because I was never a hippie or a big psychedelic fan. But if you were studying guitar, you had to learn Hendrix, and I fell in love with a lot of his music, especially the live stuff. I was also a big fan of Jeff Beck and Leslie West. A lot of guys thought I was nuts because at this time (the early 80's) this was considered "old." However, I still liked the modern guys at the time, Van Halen, Michael Schenker, Malmsteen, and especially Randy Rhoads. It's interesting that nearly twenty years later, Hendrix's music seems the most fresh and timeless, not to take anything away from the others as far as playing ability.
For the past ten years or so I've gravitated toward more jazz oriented players. Today my favorites are: Jimmy Herring (of Aquarium Rescue Unit and Phil Lesh & Friends), Scott Henderson, gypsy/fusion guitarist Bireli Lagrene, Wayne Krantz, Strunz & Farah, Junion Brown, Dave Gilmore (of New York, although I love the English Dave Gilmore's playing, too), Dave Fuzinski, Paul Bollenback, Ron Affif, Pat Metheny (preferably with his trio and with Kenny Garret, Michael Brecker and others) and of course John McLaughlin
CW: What's your approach to composition? Much of the music sounds improvisational. Do you jam to come up with ideas? Do you write a loose framework for a track and just go with it? Or do you just run the tape and keep the best bits?

AS: I do all of the above.
MM: The concept of Attention Deficit is to keep things pretty open and collaborative. Certainly a lot of the first record was as you described it. We actually didn't want it to sound too focused! When we composed the music for The Idiot King, we took a little different tactic. We each brought in ideas in various states of complexity and preparedness, but nothing completely finished. Then we all worked together to try to organize the ideas in ways that would make sense and be fun to play. Everybody really contributed equally, and it was fun to see whose skills would end up bringing an idea into focus each time.
CW: Michael, you have a big following in the New Age genre. In fact, in that context is the first time I saw your name (a long time ago!). New Age music and Attention Deficit are kind of diametrically opposed stylistically, what with New Age being thought of as relaxing and Attention Deficit being energized and dark, even to the point of approaching sonic rampage. So, Michael, where does your musical heart really lie?
MM: Both places! I guess I'm a little strange, but I really kind of enjoy moving through different moods in music. One of the things that makes music so vital for me is that it has the power to express and process all kinds of human experience. Sometimes I enjoy the relaxing vibe of New Age music and sometimes I feel more like going more in that rampage direction! Music has a way of making sense and meaning out of all of it for me. I think all three of us are a little that way, actually. We have some pretty diverse listening habits.
CW: Where does Attention Deficit go from here?
AS: Hopefully every couple years or so we can get together to record a new record which reflects our growth both collectively and individually. We'd also love to tour and are hoping to make this happen at some point in the near future.
MM: We're not sure! It's always been kind of an experimental project, so we wouldn't want it to fall into any pattern that was too predictable -- even by us!

I cannot describe Philip Glass in a summary but all I can say is that this man inspired me to become a composer. So here's what Wikipedia had to say about Philip Glass:

Not since hearing about the Deftones in '98 have I been so excited about a band. I got a call in '05 from my roommate when he was in Florida and he told me to check out this song called 'Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt' by mewithoutYou. At first listen, I noticed right away the soft vocal harmonies accompanying the bass line and the guitars adding that extra emotion to the drums that bring in the mood progression to the song. The band brings in the perfect climax where Aaron Weiss takes control of the song with his powerful spoken words. All the instruments there after add just the right emotion to make this song brilliant. I chose Disaster Tourism as the song to put on the Volume 6 because I love how the guitars start the song off and Aaron's lyrical approach.

mewithoutYou is a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based Christian experimental rock band. The band consists of vocalist Aaron Weiss, guitarist Michael Weiss, bassist Greg Jehanian and drummer Rickie Mazzotta. mewithoutYou's music is generally dominated by spoken-word vocals and free-ranging drums, bass, and guitar. Penuckle is a lyricist hands down. He has this way of reaching your ears and staying there for a while. He has many names in the industry: The iron lion, The sales man of Life, or just plain o'l P. Born in a drug infested neighborhood, the odds were already stacked up against him. He grew up seeing his Mother abused mentally and physically by the men in her life. His peers around the tender age of 9yrs began to explore the lifestyle of gang culture. Everything around young Tim Ballard was absorbed into his mind; instead of becoming his surroundings he opted to relate on another level. At age 9 he used his love of poetry to further develop his skills as a becoming lyricist. Fast forward thru the years of shcool and community talent shows and the many nights of banging beats out on the wall with his fists, and Penuckle arrived at age 20 when he released his first release. Happy Summer Solstice Day? Well in tribute of the day I'm sharing a full download of a quite clever album, which references specific months and locations in a year. The albums begins with the Summer Solstice and includes a Winter Solstice interlude within it's month. Kaddisfly put out Set Sail the Prairie in 2007 and showed us that their EP broadened their minds with experimentation. Kaddisfly already releasing several different albums with different individual influences helped them define their sound today. Set Sail the Prairie contains many different textures showing us that Kaddisfly's ensemble of musicians are open to trying new ideas and still keeping their first nurtured sound. Enjoy!

Idiot Pilot

In 2005 I attended a show that I remember almost perfectly, the 3 groups performing in order were Scene Index, Idiot Pilot and Team Sleep. The base reason in why I attended this show was for Team Sleep and to catch some other tunes before their set. Scene Index, a band composed of 2 keyboardist, one guitarist and one drummer created such a melodic sound. The sound was very ambient I loved their strong influence towards keyboards. Next up Idiot Pilot, I was very much astonished by the vocal ability of the vocalist of Idiot Pilot, combing high pitched melodic vocals and loud shouts and screams by the guitarist brought to the sound. They have come out with a new album as of last year in titled 'Wolves'. Their electronics and rock sound come out evenly with 'Wolves' because of the addition of a drummer in the production and combining more guitars and keyboards it showed a different direction from their very electronic debut album. Check out their debut album 'Strange We Should Meet Here'. You can hear Michael Harris of Idiot Pilot on Deftones remix of 'Teenager' on their B-Sides and Rarities CD. Enjoy!

Certain talented individuals conceive a notion of their own talent or gift and can weave in their creative influences with their music, not just towards one style but different blends in various musical collectives. Mike Patton has become one of my biggest influence, not just for his captivating voice but for his creativity. Creativity bring success, Originality brings success, boldness and confidence brings success. Tomahawk to some a super group of musicians, consisting of ex-helmet drummer, ex-jesus lizard guitar player, and ex-melvins bass player. A collective creating bright experimental hard rock with colorful metaphorical lyrics captivating Mike Patton's brilliant wordplay. Releasing 3 Full length albums all expressing a different experimentation coherent at the base of their style. The song I featured on May's playlist has instilled many emotions to a certain resemblance in my life, lyrically and emotionally. The Powerful and constant drum rhythm hypnotizes the bass line, the screeches of the guitar and the gloom of versus bring stubborn in mind. Something deep in a sense. In my lyrical comprehension, Point and Click relates to the obsessive character brought to us through the film 'Taxi Driver'. Tomahawk well surely impress you. Portishead

A soft female vocalist backed by a DJ and jazz influenced guitars complete what Portishead first delivered with their 1991 full length release 'Dummy' and are now known for that sound. There music touches many different styles mainly electronic, down tempo and trip hop but when it comes to influnces they are very diverse ranging from dr. dre to old jazz. On the other hand, Portishead has influenced many musicians new and old. Releasing three full length albums and one live album they sink you into it's sounds and create your love for down tempo. After 1997 Self Titled effort they went on a hiatus from 1999-2005 the members all pursued solo projects or other pursuits. On February 2005 the band played live to support Tsunami Benefit in their hometown of Bristol; their first show in 7 years, soon after Portishead released some demos on Myspace and came out with the long awaited third full length release titled simply 'Third'. From the sound of things they're just like before but with a little love for old hip hop with still that slow tempo feel. We are to expect more from this creative bunch, keep your eyes open.

Peter Gabriel

After departing progressive band Genesis Peter Gabriel went on to pursue his thoughtful solo project. His first four albums were self titled and are known either by I, II, III or also by Car, Scratch, Melt and the last one being also self titled but known as Security in the U.S his other albums were titled by one word either Us, So, or Up. So saw the biggest success and grew his fan base to not just Genesis fans. Peter's love for world music and soul musicians such as, Otis Reeding clearly explains his open mind. Peter Gabriel has collaborated with many different musicians such as, Stewart Copeland, Robert Fripp, Trent Reznor and producer Bob Ezrin. Peter has created or been apart of many different organizations to show his love of awareness and passion towards certain ideas. Some organizations include WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance), Real World Studios, WITNESS, On Demand Distribution, and Mudda. He has won many awards and has been apart of music for more than 30 years now either playing it or contributing to further improve certain musical endeavors. His music has been featured in many films and tv shows and i highly doubt you haven't heard his music in some form or another. His lyrics are realistic and express a lot of meaning. Peter Gabriel to me is a big inspiration to move forward with what I love to do and I'm certain I'm not the only one inspired by this brilliant mind.

Menomena

Individual instruments to individual musicians has gone way past Menomena's thought process when it comes to song writing lyrically and musically. Menomena came about as a side project of Danny Seim, Lackthereof and came fully assembled in late 2000. Menomena consists of three musicians which all members share singing duties and frequently swap instruments while recording. Menomena blossoms with brimming intricacy in some songs and others portraying crashing drums with piano driven bass lines. Music this full of ideas, can lead the mind to believe as overstuffed but then the next song plays on and you forget what you were thinking about it. The band's technique of building songs from improvised loops arranged with custom software make it even more appealing Knopf created what they call Deeler, read more about it here. Furthermore, their use of colorful language and words combine the art of music and poetry perfectly. Believe when i say you've found your new favorite band, Menomena.

Koushik

Soft Soothing Samples reminiscent of Manitoba and Madlib mixed in with that 60's Psych Pop Feel. Such Talent needs be recognized by other great musicians, that's why he's floating in the mist of all that's Stone Throw Records. He's collaborated with musicians such as Four Tet, Caribou and Madvillian and he's a resident of Ontario, Canada. Koushik is the son of Indian immigrants and growing up around that lifestyle Koushik took classical indian singing classes. Whilst his trips to the local farmers market in his town he visited the record shops and grew a strong love for hip hop. You can hear his vocals in some tracks on his album 'Be With' , I highly recommend this artists to everyone but if you're a fan of any of the aforementioned artists, you need this record.

Jeff Buckley

Out of the many solo artists that I admire Jeff Buckley's music touched me instantly from the first time I heard 'Grace' to living his memory through Youtube videos, Jeff Buckley will undoubtedly be a great memory in our minds. Imagine not reaching stardom until after your death, Jeff Buckley came out with 'Grace' and saw some small success, but than after his departure his music was featured in Movies, TV Shows, and Soundtracks as being that one guy in that one song from that one show or movie. Jeff Buckley was raised in California and was the son of Tim Buckley which he hardly even knew. I always start with this question just cause it's something on peoples' minds, Charts and Maps where did you guys come up with that name, reminds me of Maps & Atlases, we need to get you guys to open up for them that would be interesting?

Yeah, we were just sitting around after we started jamming, trying to think of a name. Charts and Maps was the only one that everybody could agree on. I found out that Maps and Atlases existed literally a week after we named ourselves, but we figured it didn't really matter. I mean, yeah, we're both progressive bands but we do sound quite different. There's another band called Maps as well, so all three of us could go on tour together, charts and maps and maps and maps and atlases"

When did you guys become a band?

John and I have been playing together since we were 15-ish. We had a band in high school called Soli i Sombra. The rest of us all met at USC--we all actually lived together for a year. We began jamming in this format in like May of 2007-

I enjoyed 'Charts and Maps Killed a Man' from the controlled chaotic solos to the organic fills. What's your favorite song to play live off that EP?

As of this point, the only song off of that EP that we play live is Bury Pierre. We sort of discarded the rest. We often discuss bringing 10:58 back, but it's just so long that it takes up a significant portion of any set we're likely to play. We just think our new material is better. Charts and Maps Killed a Man has pretty much the first five songs we wrote together.

How did you guys get involved with The A.M.A.R. Collective and what is your opinion on the collective organization?

I think I started chatting with Andrew Newton (of ars poetria and like 10 different bands) on the 'ol interweb-- i think he was into our really old project Soli i Sombra-- and things just sort of rolled on from there. I think AMAR is excellent. Not only as a conceptual idea, but also the people involved that I have met have all been so open minded and laid back. AMAR really gives bands and artists of all kinds an opportunity to showcase their talents, involve themselves with a community of like minded individuals and grow through connections with people. We're really happy to be involved with them.

Growing up as a kid I was forced to listen to Bob Marley, Carlos Santana, Talking Heads and because of my mother Prince but I thank my parents for that because it's made me so open minded. What did you guys listen to growing up? what influenced you to pick up a musical instrument and make that a passion?

When we were in high school John and I both had musical awakenings of sorts to the album 'El Cielo' by Dredg. It really showed us what music could be and made us begin to look outside of the box with our creative impulses. Before that we hadn't necessarily sought after music that challenged us. After El Cielo, even to today, we try to challenge ourselves in the composition of every song.

I read up on the interviews Jemayel did and he always asked this question so looking it from a different perspective. What do you think about filesharing?

Personally I fully support it in all forms. The majority of media companies are run by corporations who are selling a product more than they are facilitating art. Independent and smaller labels will be able to do fine by adapting to a new business environment. ---in my mind music is free. I'd be quite happy if all the major labels crumbled.

I saw you guys had some shows up north how did those go and how did you guys get those gigs?

Fervent e-mailing by us and the danger bees.Pretty much we were willing to play anywhere that would house us, and if they gave us gas money, then excellent. We got lucky that a couple of really cool venues were into us. Specifically, The Comet Tavern in Seattle was a lot of fun with a real cool crowd.

What's Charts and Maps plan for this year?

Well, we're recording again in June with Chris Schlarb, whose projects are on asthmatic kitty records. So that's really exciting. We're in the process of replacing Alec, our rhythm guitar player who was just so busy he couldn't commit fully to our band. Instead, Jay Watford, who also plays in Danger Bees, is gonna be playing with us. We finished our new EP (finally), titled 'Trouble at the Old Mill,' so we're trying to get that into as many ears as possible in the meantime. People can download it free from our myspage page. Um, also, we're in the process of starting an art collective with Pride of Kenya, Danger Bees, us, and a few visual artists--it's gonna be called Heard of Elephants (i think) and we're gonna get going in July. It should be fun.

Show Review: Dulce De Leche

I was invited to attend Dulce de Leche's musical presentation at the Cobalt last Sunday. It was an early show and I got their just in time to hear the opening song, which is named 'Two Tone Jack'. For you's that don't know Dulce de Leche, they are a lovely duo compromised of mainly Guitar and Percussion/Drums. They evoke colorful melodies and foot tapping rhythms that conjure a cohesive acoustic sound. A different direction from the last venture the Lead Guitarist was involved in, growing up with punk rock he provided Lead Guitar for San Fernando Valley Punk Band, Blasphemy Squad. Furthermore, Percussionist/ Drummer met Jose (Lead Guitar) of Dulce de Leche back in the Punk Days and for fun started Dulce de Leche. The show was something different from what I expected the two sat on stage after 'Two Tone Jack' composing acoustic ballads and soft sound effects provided by the percussionist, the songs were switched up lyrically with english and spanish compositions and fast and slow paced lyrics. The set ended with fellow Blasphemy Squad musicians sharing the stage with an improv track led by offbeat rhythms and jazz filled sax solos I felt like I was back in Venice's Infamous Drum Circle. For the man that missed the show check them out at Make Music Pasadena 2008 in June.

I emailed an interview to Charts and Maps but they've been a little caught up so it's been a bit time consuming for them not only playing in Charts and Maps these lads are in other bands and are also students but nevertheless I've spoken to Jemayel the low end of Charts and Maps and he's gonna try to cut it out to me sometime soon. From reading the interviews Jemayel did for Menomena, BATTLES, and The Books i'm interested to read what Jemayel has to say, on the opposite side of the table. Charts and Maps are a Los Angeles based instrumental ensemble that brings in jazz rhythms, experimental sounds, post-rock elements, and nifty solos, keeping this bands progression balanced within the quartet. With Two EP's recorded and up for free download under Wise Owl Records these guys are getting straight to it and really expressing their love for these arrangements. Only being a band for about a year these guys have a great road ahead of them imagine when show 100 comes. The chemistry will be there even tighter and stronger. love. peace&absolut happiness are the motive. You can check them out Friday, May 23 at the Knitting Factory in the alterknit lounge or at The Cocaine Saturday, June 21. They are nothing new to the psychedelic spectrum, highlighting improvisation, jam sessions and carefully and carelessly improving the real meaning of psychedelics and progressive music. listening to bands like king crimson, emerson, lake and palmer, and Can, Soft Machine is a must for those captured by the 70s psychedelic movement. Soft Machine went through many line up changes and grew into many different styles. Robert Wyatt the form of Soft Machine grew the band and increased it's popularity in the Canterbury Music Scene in the Mid 60's to early 70's. Robert Wyatt left the band in 71 but the band lived on to many lineup changes. 1976 saw the end of all Original Members and was carried on till 1977 where Soft Machine saw their last show as a working band. Soft Machine only lives on as a memory some slid towards other projects and interest and some fans left but not doubt that all will remember the talent of Soft Machine and others may never.

BATTLES (i'm an architect and here's my prison)

The diamond that was stolen held the code that melted water into letters spelling where it had been taken to. In fact, I had a vision of the numbers corresponding with the letter T-H-E-D-I-A-M-O-N-D

"I think it would be next to impossible to be less than amazed by the musical qualities exhibted by BATTLES. Their music is legendary when you listen to it and differs from the lyrics when you read it. Very few artists can claim such talent and BATTLES definitely falls into the category. The lyrics seem quite metaphorical and deep, and seem to signal a struggle or fight within an individual leaning opposite of the optimism. Whatever the meaning, the lyrics show a complicated thought process that cohesively builds the lyrics and vocals as Mike Patton does with Fantomas using less the vocal as a mainstream instrument, by as staccatos and tones that are musically cohesive with the rhythms of the other instruments in the song."

This whole band highlights creativity in general. Promising band for the future, and the best thing about this band is that every song on Mirrored challenges the last one.

DJS/ Producers Stay Away from Mac OS X 10.2.5

As more readers send in reports, the picture looks something like this: both Mac OS X 10.5.2 and an AirPort update for Tiger are suspect in problems causing audio dropouts and other issues on some (not all) recently-updated Macs. Serato is joining Native Instruments in saying 10.5.2 is "officially unsupported." At the same time, a number of readers on Tiger are reporting dropouts with their AirPort switched on; if you haven’t installed the AirPort update, I’d avoid it just in case, but in the meantime, try switching off your AirPort card while doing audio work if you run into trouble.

Scratch LIVE users have reported various problems, including increased USB dropouts, after installing the 10.5.2 update of Mac OS X.

While these are yet to be confirmed and followed up with Apple, it is currently not recommended that users update to 10.5.2.

Users who have already updated and are experiencing problems should start a topic in the help forum to let us know the details and receive technical support.

In case this comes as a surprise to anyone, it shouldn’t. Real-time music applications are very probably the most timing-dependent of any consumer application. If only we could get every software engineer in the world to do real-time music making. (Well, at least a fair number do.
)

Speaking of real-time, we appear to be getting this news close to real-time. Be sure to send detailed results to software you’re working with — as precise as possible — and hopefully this issue will be resolved soon. And be sure to comment here, as well, as all that data really is helpful.

AirPort fix upcoming? If it makes you feel any better, 10.5.x Leopard could generally screw up your AirPort, too. MacFixIt reports that 10.5.3 will resolve these issues and suggests some fixes. I hope that music playback issues get on Apple’s priority list with these fixes, as well, with these other fixes — rather than music users getting left by the wayside. At least AirPort seems to be the target of the updates, which suggests that whatever is causing this issue may be in the process of getting fixed, as well.

Such a clever name right, I thought so to. Wagon Christ is another creative venture of Luke Francis Vibert. You may have heard some of his music on compilations and or with his other projects; Plug, Ace of Clubs, Butler Kiey, Amen Andrews, and Kerrier District. He's a British recording artist and producer known for his work in the many subgeneres of electronica. Vibert originally became involved in electronic music through his interest for hip-hop as well as the environment of bedroom experimentalism associated with the swelling late-'80s U.K. dance scene. He's put out five albums under the alias Wagon Christ and 16 albums all together and many EPs. He's collaborated live with Aphex Twin and Aphex Twin used the song name 'Analord' from Vibert's album Lover's Acid. Luke Vibert is alongside Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, µ-Ziq, and Cylob as redefining the rules of electronic music in the UK in the early to mid '90s. My roommate likes this song because he can break dance to it. Enjoy the song 'My Organ in Your Face' on Volume 6.

Hearing about them off an Elbow comparison review I caught interest in the band through their more nurtured self titled release in 06. The band hails from New York and from what I read they got pigeonhold in the emo music scene when they started playing shows. The "Emo" genre always astounded me and the scene it was named after astounded me even more but hey we all have era's in life. look at the 70s, 80s, and 90s. 'As Tall As Lions' has the melodic and rhythmic overdubbed vocals that brings that Comparison to Guy Garvey of Elbow. You'll hear everything from acoustic strings to trumpet and ambient (mellow relaxed feel) to high falsettos. Lyrics lingering in love in which we can all relate. Emotions are described in many ways lyrically is just another method. Enjoy these fresh cats from New York. I Recommend their 2006 Release 'As Tall As Lions' one of my favorites.

So I've changed the Musical Brochure to each month in which i will feature 15 artists and in that month i'll write about each band individually. A couple of things to address the project that I was talking about before has been cancelled due to creative differences both parties decided it's what would be best for all us. So with that said I have been brainstorming ideas in how to promote the Musical Brochure I've spoken to neighbors, family, and friends about it and i've come up with some good ideas. Tupolev- Tupolev EP

I found this review on Tupolev, I thought it was better than the one I was writing. I need to read more books and go to college. haha. enjoy

Sometimes what is not played is more important than the sounds played. I have no idea, who this statement is from (Ornette Coleman might be a good hint, but I really cant remember), but the holes left open by Tupolev are so big an old fashioned airplane would fit through. This wonderful debut EP has half an hour of serious and intentional noodling, lost in its own universe of the notes played and finds a perfect balance between structured composition and the liberty (or lethargy) of letting things run its own way. Thinking about it, I bet a lot of work, reworking and chipping away of superfluous parts went into the writing of these tracks. And it was well worth it. This EP is free to download on the 12rec-website.

My amazement as to how deep some musicians are able to get into sound without losing contact to a defined structure is still as big as a mountain. Just as these songs are, even if they hide underneath a soft blanket for most of the time. Tupolev, a name I rather associated with a big hunk of machinery that people always wondered about how it was able to fly at all, and did for so long nevertheless, are a young band or band-collective from Austria, who founded when they went and bought their instruments[1] some years ago. Sounds as if those years in a rehearsal space really were worth it. And also gives away that it would be impossible to hurry them into anything. A trait of character no less remarkable in our hectic modern age. Their deep, almost deadpan seriousness mixed with a natural dilettantism makes up for most of the wonders they prepare on this, their debut EP. At six songs and a little over half an hour, this record is more than just an EP, actually, but the term mini LP has become as outdated as the concept of dialling a number on a telephone.

The tracks on this record are a quite dispersed batch of ideas and well-structured musical narratives that are held together by their earnest execution. Amongst the basic piano, drum, bass / cello and guitar figures there is some field recordings of people talking in a pub, electronic noise mixed through the flowing sounds, then some vocal pieces and even one song with almost real singing verses. A bottleneck guitar straight from the first album of Sigur Ros. The intensity of a handful of musicians really listening to each other from Bohren & Der Club Of Gores black album. And, while I am naming legendary records here, I bet that opening D-chord of Frigid Stars by Codeine had a major influence on Tupolev, especially in the way chords and single notes get their time to sound, vibrate and fade out. Most of the time the basic instruments play in a lose yet well-timed and defined structure, with lots of holes to be filled or purposefully left open. This looseness pays a lot for the joyfulness that is transmitted in the basically sombre and melancholic atmosphere of the songs.

For instance, good ole mistake, the track closest to the traditional concept of a song, is like a group of musicians who stumbled upon each other accidentally in a seedy, half empty bar late at night and half drunk and decided to play one song together. Which makes Black Heart Procession sound like a tightly wound rock-band in comparison. The other song with real lyrics and singing verses, as for misery, almost topples over itself in its own somnambulence. And after all that ending with the multiple self-recordings of the Tupolev Choir acapella, where obviously the band itself loses words to describe what is going on and falls into the theoretical trap of seeing the vocals as just another instrument from the opposite side.

Sounds as if Tupolev are carving out their own unique musical niche, that sits deftly between all kinds of styles: too amateurish for modern classical music, too simple for jazz, too loose for postrock, too weird for the alternative crowd, not weird enough for the people who read The Wire (or maybe not.) Musicians daring to go their own way so self consciously always get my respect. And after having penned all of this down, I wonder if this is going to be the year for great, instrumental music (see Natsat or Dont mess with Texas for that argument) that transcends the sturdy boundaries of postrock-whatever and enjoys itself meandering into every direction it fancies.

Yo! What Up Fellas? Well to start off my names Jerry and well basically my objective with the musical brochure is to get music locally, nationally, and 
internationally out to the masses, music in which i think doesn't get it's proper recognition. What better way to start than locally right? Well hopefully you 
guys gather up some more fans with this interview and we can get you guys out of the states. The way I see it if we gather up enough people to help each
other out as if we were a government in control then we'll succeed with our purpose to get the correct insight instilled in people's head instead of all that 
giber-jaber. that's the ultimate goal. Alright let's get to it.

Ninja Academy? was that the original name for the band?

Outdo: No, the original name was actually bra'ka dOm, which leads to the next question.  Indo will tell you how we changed the name to Ninja Academy. Indo?

Indo: I was working on this guy's project. He was writting music for a commercial and titled it ninja academy. I stared at it on my desktop for a while. I thought it

would be a great name for a band. I like what it means and what it stands for.

What the hell does Bra'ka dOm mean?

Outdo: It's an onomatopoeia for the sound drums make. One of the many sounds anyways.

I'm a fan of Woven you guys are good friends how did you guys get acquainted?

Indo: I dont remember when exactly we met but it was probably when were doing events at this place called the Hangar 1018. They were doing

events there as well and we sort of joined forces. Great guys! They've become real close friends.

How long have you guys been playing together, just Indo and Outdo?

Outdo: We've been playing together for many, many years.  You can say we basically trained together.  Cut our teeth, as they say.

As Ninja Academy, though, about 5 years now.

Indo: Yeah we know each other's ins and outs, that's why we play well together.

I know there are other guest appearances any ideas in gathering up a bigger academy in the future?

Outdo: A ninja orchestra would be the shit. Also, a gang of martial artists mixing it up on stage while we perform would be dope too.  We have a bunch of ideas,

 it's just a matter of making them come to fruition.

Indo: Yes, the possibilities are endless.

When I first heard you guys the influences of the Ruins and Korekyojin stood at the most to me, where do you guys grap your influences from

besides the Ramen. Socially & Musically that is?

Indo:  Our influnces aren't what you think they are I guess. I like the ruins but I've been making music like this before i knew about the Ruins or Lightning

Bolt. So i can't really say I'm influenced by them.  I dont have any Rush or King Crimson records. I love Pixies, Charles Mingus, Bossa Nova, Radiohead,

which influence me. But I feel we are more influence by relationships with people around us. We might be also influence by the approach of the music

rather than sonicly.

What's the craziest thing you've seen at one of your live shows from either one of the ninjas or one of your fans?

Outdo: At one show one dude was literally doing back flips because he was so excited by us. I think he hurt himself.  Also, when Donkey Punch was

still with us, his last time at Old Towne Pub in Pasadena he repelled down the wall outside and jumped up on the bar and did his thing.  That was THE SHIT!

I miss that guy.

Tell me your thoughts about the Sunset Strip?

Outdo: Pshh, whatever. Read a blog I wrote about it on our Myspace. It's called "Our recent experience at The Whiskey in Hollywood".  That pretty much

sums up how I feel.

Indo: Boycott the Sunset Strip.

Where did you guys film the video for Your Kung Fu Sucks?

Outdo: Would Batman tell you where the Batcave is?

What are the bands short term and long term goals?

Outdo: I'd like to take this thing around the world, specifically Japan and Europe. Tour!

Indo: Touring and, man, making records. Also, would like to get into  soundrack for films. Can you imagine Ninja Academy music for a film? Yes yes!

Have you guys played in other bands before? If so, when and was it different from the sound you guys ?

Outdo: We've both played in too many to list.  Hundreds. I've done nothing like what I am doing with Indo.  This guy's a genius.

Indo: We collaborate on many projects both as the rhythm section and individually. With Ninja Academy, I feel we have total freedom to explore

our musical endeavors. Our mission is to be true to what's inside to preserve its integrity.

How many effect pedals are you workin' with Indo?

Indo: I have an old big muff reverb and a loop station. I have a pitch shifter.  The hog. It seems never ending. Apparantly you cant

have one pedal that does everything.

Outdo, Where did you get your rhythm from? drumming influences as you grew up with your skins?

Outdo:  I don't really know.  My parents certainly weren't musical.  I guess I just liked music and kinda had a knack for it.  Some of my first drumming

influences were The Cure, The Pixies, Dramarama... 80's shit. Then I got into classic rock, then jazz.  I like everything.

Drummers that influenced me: Neil Peart (yeah, yeah), Tony Williams, David Lovering, Lol Tolhurst (ha!).

You think 2pac's really coming back?

I admit I jumped the gun to quick about saying Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra & Tra-la-la Band's release of '13 blues for thirteen Moons' was hands down the best post-rock album of this year of course it was a decision based upon the moment and i must say that it's early in the year and i need to remind myself on the abundance of post-rock bands out there some of those being one's that have the talent to elaborate solid post-rock compositions. In interlude, after opening for bands like Minus the Bear, Pelican, These Arms are Snakes, Pinback, Red Spraowes, and even Tool. Russian Circles refined their sound of blending in the metal influence to the their more subtle post-rock and the dark eerie sound they've already acquired and punched us in the face with 'Station'. As some of you may already know the new addition to Russian Circles Brian Cook (These Arms are Snakes and Botch). Brian brings in a different side in experimentation and experience and embraces Russian Circles in their established sound that being of what we heard from 'Enter' which hit out of nowhere and exploded on the post-rock scene. I would love to give you a track by track on 'Station' but i'll spare myself the time that i'd put in typing the review track by track because the music itself is more than any words or letters said or read off this computer screen and this is coming from a band that hasn't used one word in their music. Russian Circles at first listen i thought was a Neurosis side project or something in that stature, but i was wrong some cats from Illinois decided to create some f****g mind-blowing music. expect something more than what your expecting and that's what you'll get with 'Station'. May 6th is the release date go grap a copy from itunes or your local record store i'm pretty sure amoeba will have it.

Atmosphere- When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold

So I got the leak of the new album and from the very start I can tell I was gonna hear something different from what I've heard from Atmosphere before. The Official Release date of the LP is April 22th go cop it at your local record store and support them on their upcoming tour they shall be playing 2 special nights at the Henry Fonda or Music Box whatever you want to call it in May check out this site for more info. Anyways the album starts of with a Music Box playing and then a beautiful piano piece comes in and Slug hits it off right way, more of the melodic Slug instead of the aggressive Slug. I've haven't done my research on this album yet but from what I know Ant does production on all Atmosphere records you can tell after getting to the next track Atmosphere took this record on a bit of a softer swag. I read up a little before writing this track by track and read a track by track from slug & ant. When I frist heard "The Skinny" originally I didn't listen to the lyrics much but now that I read up on what it's really about it's kinda scary how Slug can torture you with his words, an inspiration i guess that's what Slug called it read up it's not about a pimp. You can tell by each track Atmosphere changed up a bit for this album the music is fresh and kinda poppy. Shoulda Known hits you off straight in the mouth, the first thing i thought I about was sex. Slug said it reminded him of Prince the 'Dirty Mind' era, who would've known haha. You comes on, I think this song has to be one of my favorite tracks on the album especially the opening line. "You Love the people that Love you, You hear the music they move to, You Give your Ode to the Fall through, but you don't know, you don't know, you don't know, you don't know YOU". Paintings starts off with an instrument I have probably never heard in a Rap song before, a slide guitar, very down-tempo another less aggressive song. Your Glasshouse starts off with Tunde from TV on the Radio singing and then a deep synth comes in and Tunde voice fades in and out of the track till Slug comes in. With a title like Yesterday you'd think it'll work perfect with the direction the sound was going on this album. The songs starts off with a very bright piano piece that Stevie would bop his head to, you'll then realize the song is about Slug's Father, thinking optimistic about sad moments in life is the way to live. Guarantees is some guitar chords being played over Slug's rapping straight up go watch the video. If you want to know a little bit about Slug "Me" is 3:40 minute biography of his life. Another favorite track of mine on this record is "Wild Wild Horses" the instruments they used cohesively worked with each other everything about this song is great, Slug said, "That song gave me a glimpse into what my life is going to be like when I actually do have to go work in Vegas. Because it's coming. I'm not going to quit, ever. Even when they fire me, I'm just going to go to Vegas". haha. I didn't like the way i wrote about the next track "Can't Break" so here's what Slug and Ant had to say about the track Ant: "This was probably the biggest challenge. It's based on a sample, and we were trying to find the original sound they made. We had maybe 10 synthesizers, all kinds of them. We had two keyboardists, me the guitarist and our engineer Joe all playing" Slug: "You should've seen all five of them playing synths at the same time. It looked the Devo." haha. Slug says he sent 'The Waitress' to Tom Waits and all he did was Beatbox on the track haha. The Perfect way to end the album at least musically, it closes with a song about a girl that uses and abuses escapism through music ending where the album begun. Overall this album is solid probably the most accessible album from Atmosphere, more sophisticated. Go Cop It! I am. Go Download the Track Shoulda Known for free thanks to Atmosphere on Myspace. Hey whats up Guys/Gals? well it was a little of a late notice on my part on this weeks artwork and this week's featured artists, but everything is ready to go for you to listen to and enjoy. A couple of things going on News for your eyes and ears. Basically, a new venture has taken it's toll and well i'll be putting more effort to that project. It'll involve more people and artists and help the society we live around and possibly reach others nationally and even internationally. No big hints on what the project will involve and who i'll be involved with because I want to have more information for you guys to really understand what's going on instead setting sails with a vague explanation. So with that said The Musical Brochure will be every Month now on the first day of the Month. It'll help settle more artists locally and establish more promotions plus dealing with two daily projects plus my living arrangements and income would just be too much to deal with and imagine having a girlfriend like that haha, but anyways in lamens terms the Musical Brochure will know be available the first day of each month instead of weekly. Okay so on to this week's Musical Brochure. I've mixed in a bunch of different styles and artists that i want you guys to listen to and I want to write something about each artists in which i will start doing with artists monthly. I will have enought gathered up information and really get to know the artists and what they're all about. The Mixtape starts off with Saul Williams a poet, that mixes his spoken word rapping to different beats from guitar driven solos to just simple arranged beats, Saul Williams is known for his messages in his songs and trying to build up the listeners knowledge of certain subjects he raps about, very inspirational and meaningful words. Next comes Bonnie "Billy" Prince singing a cover of Bruce Springstein's Thunder Road with the assistant of the post-rock/ jazz ensemble 'Tortoise'. This song has a great story and I really suggest you read the lyrics, plus this combo is really strong. Tortoise & Bonnie "Billy" Prince put together this cd that consists of a bunch of covers they enjoy ranging from artists like 1980 punk band minutemen, brazilian musician Milton Nascimento, Devo and even Sir Elton John this album is great and I think you should purchase it. Next comes up what I call Elmo's Rock Band, Satomi Matsuzaki's voice sounds so much like Elmo it's funny but anyways this song hits hard and the guitar dubbing sounds great. Brian Eno's 'Sky Saw' off of Another Green World daggers in. The Great Bass Line makes up for the long intro to the very few lyrics but once you hear those lyrics you fall right into Eno's Trap guessing what all the voices are saying. It's said that Eno's songwriting process is quite often based more on the sounds of the words than on the meaning. Anyways to the next band, Their are bands that I listen to and I can tell by the first song this band has something going. When I first heard Stateless a band involved in the Leeds Music Scene I heard that reminiscence of Jeff Buckley and hints of Aphex Twin. Chris James voice is strong and very emotional like of Jeff Buckley and the tracks go on having a heavy influence in electronic and dj work, Chris did tour with DJ Shadow. Knocking down the front door Ninja Academy surprises the shit out of anything living or non living. Their live performances are very entertaining they're not apart of the Japanese Music Scene influence towards the noise scene but they are very influenced by their Asian Roots eating Chow Mein before every show. haha. Jungle Wabbit (Episode 1) is fun. The Wabbit then jumps into the Circus of Man Man If you haven't heard Man Man yet you are missing out on some very fun and experimental stuff. Man Man uses anything to make noises and sounds to create their music and their newest album 'Rabbit Habits' spotlights that aspect of their experimenting. Watch their special on Pitchfork here on YouTube. I wanted to you guys to hear those song by Sweep the Leg Johnny the vocalist plays saxphone after the vocal melodies, it weaves in just right. Next is a band from Iceland names after a drink, Singapore Sling they're known for their feedback noises the song I put on this week's playlist is called "Life is Killing my Rock N' Roll" which is simple and to the point lyrically, buy one of their albums on Amazon. Up next comes my favorite electronic artists Aphex Twin, this song comes from his Selected Ambient Works 85-92 which also happens to be my favorite electronic album. I hope you enjoy this song I always do. Lucky Track 11 is Without Out from New Orleans band Mute Math. This song came off their first release of their Self Titled released off of the indie label Telepromt when Mute Math got on Warner Bros they re-released a new version excluding this track and including old tracks off of their first effort "Reset EP" which now is out of print. Great Lyrics always keeps me Optimistic. On to the next song me and my friend were talking about this band and i've never really listened to their music as much but after I heard some of their tracks off of their newest release Do It! I thought it was great. It has gotten mild reviews but i really enjoyed the track I choose to put on this week's Artists. Live 'Clinic' wears nurse outfits or costumes with surgical masks. They have some gnarly pictures. The Next Track holds a special memory I remember when I was a teenager about 16 or 17 i would sit on the roof of my parent's apartment and just look at the stars and just think about stuff. Massive Attack has one of those effects on people they honestly changed my life and I think we all need the help of someone by the words they encourage or something optimistic they look up to, another lyrically well written song. After hearing this song on Indie 103.1 a couple of days I got a happy because I hardly listen to the radio and I'm happy they are playing good music on the radio. From the live performances I've seen on Youtube they don't seem like the greatest live band but this song is just great and what they have to say is reality there's nothing better than a band that reminds you of reality. The Last Band just got dropped from their label and last winter finished up their last little tour for awhile, Team Sleep announced some News about what happened and what's going to happen with Team Sleep in the years to come, they created a new intimate website that is dedicated to memories of the band and Todd from Team Sleep comments and talks to fans on their. They re-released some demo tracks that were reworked and re-recorded and this one came up on the site. It was demo back in 06 or 07 and was played live at their last winter tour. I was lucky to see such an amazing song live, blessings to their future ventures. I hope you guys enjoy this week's playlist and if you have any feedback you know where to reach me. blessings.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band- 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons

This album by far beats any album that has come out this year no doubt in my mind. Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band is a candian outfit that since 2005 consists of 7 musicians collectively creating beautiful music the band was orginally formed in 1999 and have released 4 LPs and 1 EP. The band was formed as a project in which Efrim Menuck hoped to learn how to score music but the idea was then abandoned when he realized that music is about the feeling that you have the music. Efrim recruited 2 musicians from his already known band, Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This band differs from Godspeed You! Black Emperor because of the vocal arrangements instead of samples like GY!BE, the band has undergone many lineup changes and band names. Ok! to the album, 13 blues for thirteen moons. When you buy the album or download it from some blogsite your ipod will look like it was tagged wrong but just so you know the first track starts at track 13 haha. the first 12 tracks consist of weird drone noises which confuse the shit out of me. Track 13 hits after 1 minute and 8 seconds of drone noises and the track begins with what sounds like the beginning of The Mars Volta's Televators then comes in the vocal chants being accompanied by a couple of plucks of strings, slowly the cello hits off the mood and it goes into the heavier A Silver Mt. Zion. The track is called '1,000,000 died to make this sound' this time around Efrim included a Lyric Booklet in the album which is called Himnos de Sion. the album goes on to include 3 more fairly long tracks which are as epic as the first musical track on the album. Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band did a great job with this album somehow composing fairly well written songs with 7 musicians which people would imagine would sound like a disaster. I highly recommend you purchase '13 Blues for Thirteen Moons' and go check them out live if they ever come around the states again. I'm purchasing it at Amoeba today if i end up attending the Free Show Tonight. I've included one track from the new album for download. Enjoy.

Penuckle- The Sun Beckons

A couple of years ago I purchased his CD from reading an album review online, I don't remember which one it was exactly but that's irrelevant. The purpose was that they reviewed it as a solid LP. I checked him out on Myspace and listened to the songs on his player. The beats where fresh and lyrically it was brilliant. I purchased his CD at Backside Records and put it on my ipod when i got home. When i read his influences which range from Fila Brazilia, Cibo Matto, Radiohead, Common, KRS-1, I knew this cat was gonna be unique. Starting of with the first track simply called 'Welcome'. The Lyrics to the chorus was what got me, I had to be the reality of it. "I want the whole but ain't go no dough, The tax is high and the pay is low, i got the right to be free but I can't be me, the fruit ain't fall to close to the tree" in between those bars a sampled voice that states "YOUR IN AMERICA NOW" haha brilliant right? word. The CD goes on, tracks like Today which reminds me of and old Lords of the Underground beat and other tracks like Hot Life, Study Music (Get Ready) and Ghetto which has a comedic version of Mr. Rogers saying, will you like to be my neighbor? which I thought was funny because it's sarcastic. So Last Night I checked my new messages on my Myspace and guess who messaged me, damn Penuckle. He was just advising me that his new record which has been called Blunts & Roses and will be out very soon. I didn't even have him as a friend it was kinda of embarrassing in a sense, but anyways the main purpose of this post is to give you an idea of his latest record so that you can go purchase his New Record 'Blunts n' Roses' and check out any upcoming shows. A download of the Self Titled track off his new record will be avialable for download which was provided free on his Myspace, so download it, listen to it, sleep with it. I will keep you posted on the album date and any new information that develops with Penuckle. Blessings.

Will Haven

I think the reason why I'm so open minded with music has to be that i love metal punk hip-hop folk jazz and pop in no particular order. I'm not stereotypical though, it's mainly about the love for music, dig. anyways I've been through some good Will Haven days from first listening to Carpe Diem to digging deep for some bootlegs and rare tracks like the last Grady demos for instance, Handlerbars To Freedom. What's their sound? well it's pretty straight forward in your face aggression, with heavy riffs, not much on the double pedal metal but with a kinda of evil feel plus adding a little of Grady's vocal code it gives it that mystery. I think i heard of Will Haven through a Deftones Fan and since then I've just loved the aggression with the vocals and the riffs of the guitars. They've released 4 studio albums beginning with 1997 release of El Diablo after coming WHVN then the biggest seller Carpe Diem. Secrets were being mingled around and word was it that Grady left the band for good after his pervious awols. After all this getting to the Haven Camp, WHVN decided to write a bulletin via Myspace to all that pn February 19th 2007 Will Haven will play a free show at the Troubador in Los Angeles, and will have a 'big announcement'. The announcement was that Grady Avenell had left the band and been replaced by longtime friend of the band (and former vocalist for Red Tape) Jeff Jaworski, I attended that show it was a great show plus it was free and I was right upfront. check out the video on YouTube I'm at the front right side of the stage, Jaworski is screaming in my face in the beginning. That night I also saw Eightfourseven for the first time which by far has to be one of the most underated bands locally and I'm pretty sure I'm speaking for a majority of people. Other bands that played that night where Death Valley High and Red Host. Will Haven there after with the help of their new record label Bieler Bros Records put out The Hierophant which includes all music by the original members and vocals which were recorded with Jeff Jaworski and with Grady Avenell contributing to the writing of several songs. The Heirophant never released a video but Will Haven did tour the album inEurope with Deftones and went on to the UK. Will Haven did release one Music Video off Carpe Diem, called Carpe Diem and it features Deftones Vocalist Chino Moreno getting his car stolen. Will Haven is to release a dvd soon and plans on recording their follow up which is in the writting process already.

So Week 4 I just recently became un-employed so I've had alot of time to update the Blog. This week's Playlist is filled with a bunch of goodies from 70's psychedelic to even some metal and acoustic works. Sound Tribe Sector 9- Artifact

Last summer my friend told me about this band and because I was really into prefuse 73, flying lotus, j dilla it was just perfect. Unfortunely my iPod crashed so i had to retrieve all the music i had or remembered that i had and i totally forgot about this band. I just recently remembered about them and i found it today and it brought back great memories. Sound Tribe Sector 9 has played various festivals and musical events but stayed pretty independent while gaining fans through their live perfornamce. The album i own from the various one's they've released sounds very down-tempo-ish, more of a Zero 7 feel with folk & acoustic sounds soulful ballads and even just easy listening tracks. I've read up on them and came to find out that everyone in the band plays the Laptop haha. They all sequence and record different sounds together and sample it's pretty interesting a lot of computer work going on there. You can hear pianos, glitch, chimes, electronics, drums. phasing. The album reminds me of a slow tempo version of 'Rounds' album from Four Tet, with the loops and samplings. With 'Artifact' you can hear every style and experimentation it's very clever you can hear every little thing like congas on the track 'Tokyo' and you can also hear an electric guitar used with a slide. It's a bunch of collective sounds weaved cohesively it works well, I haven't had a chance to see these guys live but when i do get the chance I'd love to catch this live. Beautiful guitar solos with ambient type beats and glitch, you'll even hear like arabic music or something reminiscent of that. It took me forever to find this album so I'm making it available for free through MediaFire because it took me a long time to find a copy. I hope you guys enjoy this album STS9- Artifact it's very creative in my opinion. Noticeable genres Electronica, Jazz, Funk, Pop, Ambient, Psychedelic, Hip Hop, Techno, Soul, just a straight up jam band. *UPDATE* STS9 will be at the House of Blues Sunset Strip May 16 and 17 tickets are on sale now $17.50 for One night and $35.00 for a 2 day pass on sale at ticketmaster. here's the link

El Ten Eleven

So a big instrumental night for The Silent Ballet took place back in March which I was planning to attend but never went. I regret not going the night I wanted to go because I just started listening more to El Ten Eleven and read some info about them. The bill was pretty good it was El Ten Eleven, The Drift, The Littlest Vikings, and Signal Hill one night at Pehrspace for $5 bucks, i think, but anyways This band does a great job of giving you an intersting show. They are two gentlemen one on the drums and the other on bass guitar, electric guitar and looping. He has this loop station in which he constanly records and loops the recording and just keeps on adding with guitar and bass notes at the SAME TIME. He has this special guitar that is has two necks one guitar and one bass guitar, so he'll be playing loops on bass and on guitar it's very clever and unique. They have this live video of him doing it, There is also a music video for their single i suppose 'Hot Cakes' which are both pretty good. other than that it seems like a great live experience and a sight to see. Next time they come in town i'll try my hardest to attend it. They are on Tour right now.

I think everyone should be scared of ebu gogo ugly ebu gogo what an ugly name? kind of like a death metal band, right? Or a punk rock group well check this out I don't know how Ebu Gogo got into my Ipod it's like some sort of virus i swear, damn bands. jk but let's start this off with a little background on Ebu Gogo they are a three piece Action/Adventure band comprised of Brendan Bell, Justin Abene, and Gavin Castleton of the futurock band Gruvis Malt and they are from Providence, Rhode Island. WTF? yup there are some good bands over there like, "Shit, I can't think of any of the top of my head" haha, but this band combines heavy synthesizers on some songs, noise rock, metal/punk well i can't really define them, but their influences surely stand out, ranging influences from Mahavishnu Orchestra, Fantomas, Boredoms. Talking Heads, and Neu!. I can describe them like the new age 'Residents' band with Fantomas-less frantic feel to it, well at times Ebu Gogo can amaze you, Keep you drifted and then pull you in fast and heavy. It's an Adventure like listening to 'The Advantage' with those NES covers it's fun. it's really hard to define their music but it's defintely got the rock-esque with a Math Rock feel. Very Rhythmically Complex, one of it's tagged genres is weird on LastFm haha. very obscured song titles too. Check out their cd and look for them at Pehrspace May 2nd in Los Angeles. So i've been here at home looking for a job for the past few days, now actually 2 weeks haha. anyways i go through out my day surrounding myself with music and positive energy to keep myself sane in this world. I have a goal in life; to one day achieve something that i feel content about before i die. I have ideas I have talents I have faith in myself but sometimes you sit there stoned and trip on the fact, "Man I'm living my life, slowly and slowly i realize one day i'm going to die, that i'm not going to be alive. not here". I don't know if your soul goes and you become like this fertilizer that helps make a tree grow but i know mentally&logically that at one point in time i will die, but one day at a time right, it seems like the days are going by so fast like, I am in a mentally subsidizing time machine not counting minutes nor seconds but weeks, months and years. i'll die. with or without a family, with or without being content, loving someone and someone loving you equally till the day we die, it seems rare now, that's ancient right. Well think about it no one really agrees anymore everyone is judgmental. We live in that sort of society. Okay! Now on to the song sorry for that off thought. So I judge music right away maybe not by it's genre or fans but more about the labels decisions to make them popular. I get caught up in the fact that mainstream bands shouldn't be good or talented musicians but you stop to think, Wait! They were doing good once right, Coming to help? bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Muse off the top of my head. I picked out Death Cab for Cutie as a mainstream artist, which in terms are and I stood them up. My roommate told me to listen to this song, i never myself sat down and appreciated their music. I BOUGHT AN ALBUM and never really listened to it; Back with the first credit card days and tower records closing down ,what?.. anyways my itunes randomly hit this song from Death Cab for Cutie I downloaded for my roommate (ay jose if your reading this give me a blank i'll make that copy) so then I heard the outro, I guess it was very heavy so it caught my attention the dynamics i guess, but anyways it started it off from the beginning very simple, easy, i didn't seem like anything special, but i guess after the climax came in it hit me. Wow! This is it, that's the song the emotion. it simply is what it is. Simple. I've always treasured simplicity, How someone can get their point across with simplicity nothing all metaphorical but just simple. Very reminiscent of radiohead which really get much more metaphorical by their audience and listeners perception. the listeners distort the real meaning, but anyways this song is beautiful and i think you guys should watch this video i found on YouTube. So I'm gonna host it on my blog for the day. Check it Out.

Manitoba- Up In Flames

It's like one of those albums you can't wait to listen to from the very beginning to the last seconds of the end. The first song seems so perfect, with a vocal delay choked up by heavy phasing and acoustic guitar strumming brings the song into a breakbeat-esque beat sampling drum beats to such an epic song already and to end up to a kinda of free jazz feel and an ambient minimal beat congested with little what sounds like birds chirping. Manitoba does a great job keeping you in his song, capturing you easily, having you figuring out 'what was that i just heard'. p.s. the song is called 'I've lived on a dirt road all my life' i think you'll enjoy that song. the CD goes on and on with what it seems like many influences from free jazz, breakbeat, dream pop, noise rock, shoegaze. Manitoba does a great job mixing all his influences in this CD. Up in Flames in my opinion is a great way of showing you he loves music and is open minded to experimenting. Some of you might recognize the distinct similarities to Caribou well this is not a trademark incident but a lawsuit with Richard Manitoba aka The Handsomest Man in Rock n Roll forcing Manitoba to change his name to Caribou, yes. Caribou. Well anyways this album was released under Manitoba in 2003 and was re-issued 3 years later under the moniker Caribou. So that clears up the confusion you might have had with Manitoba and Caribou at Amoeba before you decided to leave it at the store thinking it was the same CD, well you missed out because when it was re-issued in 2006 they released 6 more songs in an extra disc. So run back and get those other tracks, hurry before supplies last, haha. Anyways, I hope you go buy the album and support Caribou on his upcoming tour he'll be at the El Rey Theater April 24. Aoki Takamasa + Tujiko Noriko- 28

There is something about electronic music that I love I think it has to be the ambience or the sudden drum rush pounding my chest through my speaker system or maybe the melodic elegance in the voice that captures the presence of the music. Lately I've been getting back into the minimal and glitch sound but this time around i've been trying to find international artists, i guess the mystery of the language captivates me especially when it comes from a cute little japanese girl. Tujiko Noriko brings here pop melodies to Aoki Takamasa's electronic drums, soundscapes and the infamous glitch. Aoki Takamasa doesn't get to out of control when i comes to the glitch sound there are some artists that over use the glitch and suddenly destorys the sound into an annoying disaster of noise, but when it comes to this duo they weave their sound just right. When Aoki gets his chance to shine he still mixes the vocals just right. I think this band is great and the sound is beautiful. Aoki Takamasa + Tujiko Noriko need more fans that's why I'm making it available for free as a download. I hope you enjoy this clever international electronic outfit and check out their other work as well and if anyone knows at all what Tujiko Noriko is singing let me know because to me it's just some cute voice singing nonsense.

So I joined a gym last wednesday and it's giving me more time to listen to some of the music that i haven't heard in a while and ones that I just recently got. I jumped on the treadmill and put my ipod on shuffle and every single time i liked the song i would put it on my 'on the go' playlist so when i got home i could check the titles and listen to the songs. Some of the picks for this weeks Volume came from the workout at the gym others were old favorites i wanted others to hear because i enjoyed them. I hate using genres and labeling music but it's the only way to organize your music and artist, it makes it much easier to kind of have an idea of what the style the band is. I tried to keep it pretty easy listening this week, beside the closer but anyways noticeable genres are electronica, fusion jazz, acoustic freak folk, basically some good track. I couldn't decide on what excerpt I wanted to use this week so i just kept it to 15 songs plus Caribou does a great job starting the playlist. one of my favorite songs on this weeks playlist has to be Mew's 'Am I Wry? No'. I annoyed the crap out of the my roommates singing acapella to the one Bridge haha i don't know it just stuck to my head. Efterklang? You and I both buddy, i have no clue what that means, anyways about two years when i first heard of this band from the album 'tripper' i had to do some research about them because their sound was something i haven't really heard much of, from the first listen i felt that reminiscence of múm with the glitch but the more i heard different songs from various albums they've released their style evolved from mum's glitch sound, i heard the use of more wind and orchestral instruments it kinda seemed more like a scored arrangement, as much as i tried to do the research but i couldn't any real biographies of them, they aren't really that big of a band at least in the states, i mean coming from Denmark of course. So i didn't find out if they arrange their pieces but i did find out though that they have 5 core members and they play individually various instruments ranging from flute, computer sequencing, piano, drums, trumpet and choir, they also have 4 live band members that help arrange the choir, play violin, piano, trombone and guitar. if this danish band ever comes to the states I'm definitely attending that show i have to be there and witness how this sounds like live and see what message they're trying to evoke, because this little review will never be finished until i see that conecrt, hopefully their newest effort 'Parades' keeps me intersted, i just hit the play button on the first song.

Minimalist music is an originally American genre of experimental or Downtown music named in the 1960s based mostly in consonant harmony, steady pulse (if not immobile drones), stasis and slow transformation, and often reiteration of musical phrases or smaller units such as figures, motifs, and cells. Starting in the early 1960s as a scruffy underground scene in San Francisco alternative spaces and New York lofts, minimalism spread to become the most popular experimental music style of the late 20th century. The movement originally involved dozens of composers, although only four—Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and, less visibly if more seminally, La Monte Young—emerged to become publicly associated with it in America. In Europe, its chief exponents were Louis Andriessen, Karel Goeyvaerts, Michael Nyman, Gavin Bryars, Steve Martland, Henryk Górecki, Arvo Pärt, and John Tavener. No longer a band anymore but their music is still very much appreciated at least to the ones that know what they are all about. let me explain to you guys what i appreciate about this band, for some odd reason every single time i hear this song i can literally just cry. like without caring about anything i don't know if it's about a depressed feeling i have or just the uncontrolled happiness of a feeling but to the end of this song after the singing when it's just Declan de Barra speaking fast kinda like spoken word i just get this weird shiver down my spine. i don't even care if these guys made a damn rap song, because any sound that can give me that feeling or shivers down my spine will be appreciated. straight and simple just like a friend told me, "music is about you and it" the feeling, the emotion, the carelessness of certain things thats what makes music so beautiful. I provided a download for 'Words of Snow' and some fun links to check out. hope you guys enjoy it. i think i found volume 3's opener. haha. we'll see.

Billy Cobham- Spectrum (1973)

If you call yourself a drummer and don't listen to drummers like buddy rich, elvin jones, max roach, neil pert, carl palmer, terry bozzio and especially billy cobham you ain't got style. hah. to make a long story short, i tend to always talk to older musicians or music listeners because i was born in the late 80's so i was never around those days and i'm always intersted in listening to stories about music experiences and syles in past years, but anyways my old neighbor and i would sit down and listen to cds and just chill, order food and smoke. we would sit there listening to mahavishnu orchestra, emerson lake & palmer, king crimson, pink floyd and even madonna haha, one day we got into a pretty intense argument about which drummer in our opinion drummed his ass of in the 70's. we both ended eliminating artist by different qualities and quotas for fun and we came down to billy cobham being one of the best 70's drummers, hitting skins with mahavishnu and he's very jazzy and fun Solo Project. i feel like i'm giving away to much free stuff but hey he doesn't really need anymore money his time is long gone and recommending good old bands you would've never heard of if it wasn't for this blog post is pretty cool and also this album is just plain brillance, one of my favorites. i had to ask around just to get this album because i lost all my music on my pc and only had a burn disc to rip for download, but anyways for all you drummers out there this album is for jehu, you'll love his jazz drumming techniques. expect fast rolls, quick cymbal hits, weird ambience, guitar solos, drum solos, piano solos and i'm just talking about 'Stratus', the song massive attack sampled on blue lines called 'safe from harm'. i hope you'll enjoy this great quality copy i found. it's the remastered one =)

If you just got a new stereo system in your car or already have a good system and are tired of the same stuff rattling your license plate i suggest you check out this disc and pop it in your car. he's from UK some know him as Beni Uthman others in the UK know him as 'Benga' and some of us didn't even know that was a name. Well know you know there is a guy called Beni Uthman and he uses the pseudonym 'Benga'. i've just recently been getting more into dub and researching techniques that DJ's use combining a variety of instruments and samples on their tracks. you can tell this guy really enjoys BASS. His newest release 'Diary of An Afro Warrior' is an eclectic mix of a bunch of styles, ranging from dubstep, drum n bass, techno on some tracks and of course electronica. Not everyone will like this artist, but i think his style is unique especially coming from a african american from the UK. The feel is a bit darker than your usual dub you've probably heard but I just thought i'd write something about the cat. enjoy

The Ladies- They Mean Us

With their obscured song titles, offbeat drum signatures, and those simple yet metaphorical lyrics, you can tell these guys were having fun recording and preparing for this album , it's all for fun nothing completely serious, it's like the underground superstar group well at least to me. you might recognized the vocals or the weird drumming, it's rob crow and zach hill. yes yes it's another rob crow band haha you can never get tired of rob, he has one of the most calm and easy listening voices besides those off songs that never really fit the record and were just jokes or those weird experimental noises he's made on many of his projects, but lets get to the point this album has everything i ever wanted in a band besides one thing a bassist. Rob Crow and Zach Hill call themselves 'The Ladies'. Their Self Titled includes 8 real songs and 4 interludes. Most of them are titled 'Recycler' either 1a 1b or 2 and the other one is called 'Black Metal In The Hour of Starbucks' i know it makes no sense and when you hear the song it still won't either the drumming is basically Zach hitting i'm not sure what and this cymbal he created which is all cracked and looks broken it just sounds like a noise rock bands bridge,the actual songs on the record are short but clever. once i got this album i loved it and i hope you will to. As a gift you can download this whole album, i'll only up whole albums if i know it's worth it. Remember Support Independent Music sometimes you have to promote before supporting, but it'll all pay off in the end.

He may not be god or given you a million dollars but he did do something to make a change in our futures and that doesn't mean just Mexicans but for all Social & Ethnic Backgrounds. This Mexican American farm worker, labor leader, and civil rights activist is the co-founder of the United Farm Workers. His work led to numerous improvements for union laborers and is considered a hero for farm laborers. He also opposed both legal and illegal immigration to help keep wages higher and improve work safety rules. He is hailed as one of the greatest American Civil Rights Leaders. Let us pay tribute to him on this day and join us on:

Hercules & Love Affair- Self Titled (2008)

Not many people know about who Andy Butler is or that there is a DJ called Andy Butler, but now you know. He fronts this collaborative group under the monkier, 'Hercules and Love Affair, his self titled release that has gotten alot of attention internationally features Antony Hegarty's unique vocals from the band Antony and the Johnsons he also did a duet with the famous icelandic singer Bjork. When i uploaded the tracks on my ipod and herd first track "Time Will" play on my itunes right away i could tell this album was gonna be good. The vocals were very unique and the programming was great, i reminded of an old Depeche Mode song or a confused uk synth pop band. Track by track it gets better and better , hercules' theme sounds like the perfect song to make it on soul train's next compilation album. On Top of that the first single "Blind" with it's catchy bass line, melodic and dubbed vocals, muted trumpets, percussion and guitar tracks makes the perfect first impression on what you're gonna get from this album I recommend you check out any upcoming shows for Hercules And Love Affair and or buy the album.
